About this kit
Every dead gadget is a treasure chest. The Package Collection PCB turns "opening things up" into a game — a single board covered in dozens of SMD component footprints, from the everyday to the genuinely rare, waiting to be filled.
The board ships empty on purpose. The point isn't to buy the parts — it's to harvest them. Crack open that broken printer, the old motherboard, the dead power brick, desolder the package you're missing, and add it to the collection. Like trading cards for electronics: you need to collect them all.
Why makers love it
- Turns e-waste into a scavenger hunt — a reason to open every device
- Learn to identify SMD component packages by hand, from the common to the genuinely exotic
- Real desoldering and rework practice on real salvaged parts
- A conversation piece — mount it on the wall when it's full
How it works
- Find a broken or unwanted electronic device.
- Spot an SMD component package you don't have yet.
- Desolder it carefully and mount it in its labelled spot on the board.
- Repeat until the collection is complete.
What you'll learn
- Identify SMD packages on sight
- Desolder cleanly without lifting pads
- Use hot air on fine-pitch parts
- Assess salvaged components for reuse

FAQ
Does it come with components?
No, the board ships empty on purpose. You collect the parts yourself by salvaging them from old electronics.
What tools do I need?
A desoldering iron or a hot-air rework station, plus basic rework supplies like flux and tweezers.
Are the footprints labelled?
Yes, every footprint is silkscreened with its package name so you know exactly what you're hunting for.
Our approach
Want to see how our documentation is different?
Every MSD kit ships with an engineering design guide written by the person who designed the board. Not a pinout diagram — a real document.
